Hearing Aids and Telephones

HEARING AIDS ARE NOT ENOUGH SERIES

                                                   PART III

This week I will be discussing hearing aids and telephone use.  As mentioned in previous weeks the telecoil is extremely important in telephone use with a hearing aid. The telecoil allows the hearing aid and the telephone to be compatible and communicate with one another.  The telecoil is not available in the complete in the canal hearing aids models because of limited size of the aid.  The newer hearing aid devices have telecoils that are activated within the instrument.  We, at Hearing Doctors of Georgia pride ourselves on an extensive interview and discussion concerning our patient’s needs.  We determine with the patient whether it is useful to activate this program.

There are other types of units that are used by patients for better communication with phone use.  Behind the ear hearing systems have a function called DAI that is part of the device.  DAI is an abbreviation for direct audio input.  It is usually at the bottom of the aid.  This connection with an audio shoe and proper accessories couples with the telephone.

There are also hearing aids that have built in FM reception that use a FM transmitter to allow communication with the telephone and the TV.  Blue tooth technology has given the hearing aid user more freedom to utilize their hearing instrument directly with the telephone and TV with a push of a button.

There are also an array of telephones and amplifiers that may be used to assist the hard of hearing person in his/her communication struggles.  We, at Hearing Doctors of Georgia are trained and knowledgeable in the latest hearing aid technology and assistive devices.
