eBay, Yard Sales and Hearing Aids

Believe it or not the other day a patient came walking in with hearing aids they had won/purchased off of eBay. To our shock and surprise this patient wanted us to fit him with these hearing aids.

Not too many days later another patient came in with hearing aids she had bought at a yard sale. She too wanted us to fit her with these hearing aids.

These incidents highlight a problem with hearing health. That is that some people with hearing loss feel that any old hearing aid will do. No matter if it’s made for somebody else’s ear or hearing loss. Most of the time these patients are simply trying to cut costs but this is very dangerous.

 Not many eyeglasses sold at yard sales. Or dentures sold on eBay. Hearing loss varies by person to person based upon ear involved, severity of hearing loss and shape of the ear itself. There is no one size fits all approach to better hearing. And wearing hearing aids without being tested by an Audiologist can lead to permanent damage to your hearing.

I understand that the economy is tough right now but being foolish with your health can cost you more than just money.
